Delivery apps are a thumbnail-first interface: customers scroll a grid of small, often cropped dish images on a phone, usually while hungry and impatient. Meanwhile the upload side is strict — per-image caps, square or fixed aspect ratios, and frequent re-encoding on ingest. The practical result is that full-resolution phone photos either fail the upload or get served far heavier than any thumbnail can use. Compressing to the size the grid and the item page actually render fixes both ends at once.
